What Flawless Means

Flawless, graded FL, means no inclusions or blemishes are visible to a trained grader under ten times magnification. Internally flawless, graded IF, means no inclusions, with only minor surface blemishes.

Both grades are rare, especially in larger sizes, which is why they command a premium over lower clarity grades.

Flawless vs. VVS

VVS stones have minute inclusions that are very difficult to see even under magnification, and face-up they look identical to flawless stones to the unaided eye.

For most buyers, a VVS stone gives the same appearance as flawless at a lower price, leaving budget for cut, color, or size.

When Flawless Matters

Flawless matters most for collectors, for investment-grade stones, and for buyers who want the top grade as a matter of principle.

For engagement rings and daily jewelry, flawless rarely changes appearance, since the eye cannot see the difference face-up.

Buying Flawless Well

Always ask for the grading report for the specific stone, since flawless claims without a report cannot be verified.

Balance flawless clarity against cut first. A flawless stone with a poor cut looks duller than a VVS stone with an excellent cut.

Flawless Diamonds FAQ

What is the difference between FL and IF?

FL has no inclusions or blemishes, while IF has no inclusions but may have minor surface blemishes. Both are top grades.

Can the eye see flawless vs. VVS?

No, face-up and unaided, VVS stones look the same as flawless stones. The difference shows only under magnification.

Are flawless diamonds worth the premium?

For collectors yes, for most wearers no. A VVS stone looks identical in daily wear at a lower price.

Do flawless diamonds need special care?

No. Care is the same as for any diamond: gentle cleaning, secure settings, and yearly checks.
