Measure Your Wrist

Wrap a flexible tape around the wrist where the bracelet will sit, usually just below the wrist bone. Keep the tape snug but not tight, and note the length.

If you have no flexible tape, use a paper strip and measure it flat against a ruler. Measure in the evening, when wrists are largest, and repeat twice.

Fit Types

A snug fit adds about half an inch to the wrist size and suits bangles and cuffs that should stay in place. A comfortable fit adds about three quarters of an inch and suits most chains.

A loose fit adds about one inch and suits charm bracelets and layered chains that should move freely. A bracelet that slides over the hand is too loose, whatever the numbers say.

Bangles and Cuffs

Bangles must pass over the hand, so hand size matters as much as wrist size. Measure around the widest part of the hand with fingers together and thumb tucked in.

Cuffs with an opening can flex slightly, so they forgive small sizing errors. Solid bangles do not, so measure the hand carefully before ordering one.

Chains and Tennis Bracelets

Chain bracelets are sized by length, usually in half-inch steps. A chain that sits at the wrist bone suits most wearers, while a longer chain drapes lower.

Tennis bracelets should sit close to the wrist without pressing. A tennis bracelet that twists or flips often is usually too loose, not too tight.

Gifts and Children

For a gift, borrow a bracelet that fits the same wrist and measure its length end to end, including the clasp. That length is the size to order.

Children grow quickly, so choose adjustable bracelets or add an extender rather than ordering an exact size that will be outgrown in months.

Bracelet Size Guide FAQ

How much ease should I add?

Add half an inch for snug, three quarters for comfortable, and one inch for loose. Adjust by bracelet type.

Why does my bangle not fit though my wrist size is right?

Bangles must pass over the hand. Measure the hand with fingers together and thumb tucked, not only the wrist.

What size is a standard bracelet?

Most adult bracelets are seven to eight inches, but wrist sizes vary widely, so measure rather than ordering standard.

Can a bracelet be resized?

Chain bracelets can often be shortened or extended. Solid bangles and cuffs resize less, so measure carefully.

How tight should a tennis bracelet be?

Close enough to stay in place without pressing, and loose enough to move slightly. Frequent flipping usually means too loose.
