What Is Diamond Color?
Diamond color describes how much color a stone shows, from colorless to light yellow or brown. Most white diamonds fall in the near-colorless range, where color is hard to see without comparison stones.
Color is graded face-down against a white background, so the grade describes the stone itself, not how it looks in a particular setting.
The D-to-Z Color Scale
The scale starts at D, which is colorless, and runs through E and F, which are also colorless to most eyes, then G through J, which are near-colorless, and on to K through Z, where warmth becomes easier to see.
| Grade range | What it means |
|---|---|
| D-F | Colorless. No visible color in normal viewing. |
| G-J | Near-colorless. Color is hard to see face-up. |
| K-M | Faint color. Warmth is visible, especially in white metal. |
| N-Z | Light color. Warmth is clearly visible. |
How Color Looks in a Setting
A yellow gold setting can make slight warmth less noticeable, because the metal itself is warm. A white gold or platinum setting shows color more clearly, because the contrast is higher.
Larger stones show color more easily than smaller stones, because there is more material for light to pass through.
Fancy Colored Diamonds
Some diamonds show strong, desirable colors such as pink, blue, yellow, or green. These are graded on a separate fancy-color scale, where intensity matters more than the absence of color.
Fancy colors are rarer than white diamonds, and price depends on hue, intensity, and size, not only on the 4 Cs.
How to Choose a Color Grade
Most buyers choose G to J for a bright look at a reasonable price, especially in yellow gold. If you prefer a white metal and a larger stone, consider D to F for the cleanest look.
Compare stones side by side in the same lighting, and look at them face-up, as you will wear them, not only face-down as graders do.
Diamond Color Guide FAQ
What is the best diamond color?
D is the highest grade, but G to J often look colorless face-up and cost less. The best grade depends on setting, size, and budget.
Can you see the difference between D and G?
Most people cannot tell D from G face-up without comparison stones. The difference is easier to see face-down or in larger stones.
Does yellow gold hide color?
Yes, to a degree. Warm metal makes slight warmth less noticeable, while white metal shows it more clearly.
What are fancy colored diamonds?
Diamonds with strong natural colors such as pink, blue, or yellow, graded on intensity rather than absence of color.
Does color affect price?
Yes. Higher color grades usually cost more, and the price jump is larger for larger stones.
